White House launches health care 'reality check' Web site
The White House is stepping up its efforts to promote health care reform with the launch of a new Web initiative that officials say is designed to combat misinformation about the issue.
Citing what it calls "a troubling trend" of "wild rumors and scare tactics," the White House Monday announced the launch of http://www.whitehouse.gov/realitycheck/, a new Web page which "focuses on what reform really means for you and your family" and "debunks some common myths along the way," White House New Media Director Macon Phillips wrote on the official White House blog.
In keeping with President Obama's use of social networking sites to engage and utilize his network of supporters during his presidential campaign, the new page also provides users with a number of ways to notify their own networks of contacts about the page and its content.
The Web page features half a dozen videos from Obama aides who discuss various aspects of health care reform and it also has a set of "faq's" or frequently asked questions about health care reform.
"Moving forward, we'll use this platform to provide you with the latest 'Reality Checks' and tools to combat misinformation," Phillips writes in the blog post announcing the new Web page.
The launch of the new administration Web page comes two days after Obama used his weekly Internet and radio address to address recent attacks on Democratic efforts to pass health care reform legislation. In the address, Obama responded to "outlandish rumors that reform will promote euthanasia, cut Medicaid, or bring about a government takeover of health care."
Obama's comments came one day after former Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin posted a message on Facebook that suggested Obama's agenda for health care reform, if passed, would deny care to her parents and to her youngest child, Trig, who was born with Down's Syndrome.
The White House's aggressive move to defend health care reform also comes after a week where town halls meetings with congressmen across the country have been attended and disrupted by citizens concerned about the possible adverse effects of health care reform. –CNN
My Issue
To date, the hottest debate of the year is health care reform. Between the Democrats, Republicans and the American people this issue has become an all out war of ideas and words. And personally, it’s good to see that America’s spunk is still very much alive and well.
As for myself, I believe that health care reform is over due. I also believe that health insurance reform is equally overdue. But first things first … health care.
First and foremost, if we would demand our representatives to stop giving free medical services to illegal aliens … including their children born here in the U.S., this alone would tremendously cut spending on the federal level. Medicaid and Medicare is being given to those who do not deserve it and it’s time this free handout come to an end to those who are not American citizens.
Other areas that could be improved upon, according to what I’ve read common practices such as over testing, reducing paperwork, focus on preventative medicine, reduce in-hospital infections, institute post-hospitalization follow up and switching from current patient charting system to electronic charting would help save money.
As for these town hall meetings in which tempers are flaring … that needs to stop and everybody needs to take a deep breath!
The health care bill is just that, a bill! Yes there are four versions of the bill, therefore understandably there’s a lot of confusion and disinformation over this very controversial hot issue. However, just because there’s a bill doesn’t mean that it is law. It takes time for a bill to become law during which we as citizens have the opportunity to peacefully discuss the issues in an orderly manner. Allowing tempers to get out of control and shouting angrily at each other isn’t the right way to settle differences on any issue. Democracy is an orderly process … If order fails, democracy fails.
Course fueling the frustration, anger and discord is the fault of our representatives, including some of the more right-winged conservative radio talk show hosts such as Rush Limbaugh. He out of all is the anti-Christ of the Republican party. Nonetheless, by deploying information about the bills that is literally untrue, even dishonest, is down right unfair and fowl, and these representatives as well as many other are doing the American public an injustice by purposely disrupting the democratic process … pretty much like how socialist, even communist, countries do. So what can we do?
I dare say that most of those who are doing all the shouting and acting like a fool don’t even have a clue about what’s going on . They are simply there to disrupt … to divide and conquer so to speak. Nonetheless, for those of us who are more sensible and civil, before we take issue with what our government is dong we need to research, read and study the bills our government is trying to shove down our throats. And once we have done our homework we then take our questions and concerns before our representatives for clarification. Then if we’re not satisfied we unite to defeat the bill. And if our representatives don’t listen to us, well, kick their asses to the curb. This is the democratic process!
As for health insurance reform, I personally believe that insurance companies are partly the blame for health care costs. If we don’t do something about these companies, health insurance will become only available to the elite. The statistics are in … some 50 million American’s cannot afford basic health insurance. Therefore, it’s time for some control to level the power these companies have in setting premiums and making health care decisions. Though the health insurance industry pays lip service to reform, trust me!, they don't want reform ... oh hell no! Cause if health care reform does become a reality their bottom line would ultimately be affected and the possibility that they too would come under government control? I'm just saying.
Now, I have some grave concerns with all four proposed health care bills. However, what really concerns me above everything is with whom our President is snuggling up to in order to put these bills together. Individuals like John Holdren, Paul Ehrlich, Anne Ehrlich, Ezekiel Emanuel and Cass Sunstein concerns me. All of these individuals have published some very controversial works which include topics on forced abortions, population sterilization, planetary regime, curtailing freedom of speech and global chilling. I’ve not read their writings in detail, but what little I’ve read and heard the influence of these individuals is strong within the current administration and we all need to be VERY concerned. Therefore, it’s imperative for us to intelligently dig and uncover for ourselves the truth as to what our government is up to in all of its dealings … I believe our government is more about doing the devils business than the business of the people.
As how to pay for the proposed health care reform? The only way I see this happening is by increasing taxes across the board. And on this single issue alone, I don't know if I trust our government enough to hand over more of my money to it. With the way they keep spending my money in ways I don't approve of or voted for, example the recent bailouts of the auto and banking industry, I'm just not ready to freely open up more of my wallet.
In closing, I would like to borrow a paragraph from my Friend Robyn’s blog … it reads:
“… Do you ever wonder how Germany ended as Nazi Germany? Two reasons ..The German economy collapsed. They then started to print money like crazy, spending, spending, spending and the value of German money plummeted. Sound familiar to you? It should, that[’]s what is happening right now in this country .. Have you looked around lately to see what the US dollar is worth? When these 4 items created the perfect storm, rationing became inevitable. If the US Government keeps spending money like it is and "bailing everyone out" we will then have "the perfect economic storm". We are already well on our way. If this so-called "health care reform" passes, WHO will pay for it? WHERE will the money come from? How long before our economy totally collapse[s], our dollar plummets and we end up rationing AND, that will include your health care. So much for "there will be no rationing of health care" .. With the way we are heading it WILL be inevitable.”
