Watching the news last night you couldn’t escape Governor Sanford’s apology to his family, colleagues, friends and the people of South Carolina. Personally, I don’t care about the Governor’s affair … this is a private matter. But since Sanford is a public figure, unfortunately his private life becomes very public. Therefore, pretty much everything Sanford does comes under public scrutiny … there’s no escaping this!
Putting the issue of adultery aside for a moment, I believe how the Governor chose to handle it was wrong. Sanford had no business vanishing for four days to “resolve” his private affair. He should have known that he couldn’t get away with it. In this day and age one can find out anything if you dig enough. Life ain’t as sacred as it once used to be! Therefore, I believe that Sanford had NO CHOICE but to come clean upon returning to the U.S. What was his comment prior? Something like, I didn’t realize that my absence would create such a stir. Then lie about his whereabouts? The pimple was about to burst! Yeah, he had NO CHOICE!!!! Now back to the adultery.
Now we know the affair Sanford was engaged in has been ongoing for two years. In reading some of the emails Sanford exchanged with his mistress, he knew what he was getting into was wrong, nonetheless he decide to indulge and continue it. This was certainly no one night fling … over time, his affair became intentional. And it is obvious that he was able to keep it undercover until yesterday. Had it only been a one night fling then the outcome may have been a lot different and less of an issue.
Now as to whether or not he was in Argentina to sever the relationship remains to be seen. Personally, I don’t believe it was. Adultery is a toxic medication. Once ingested the soul is hooked! Welcome to the cheating world Governor! Adultery is like heroin, the high from it is always beckoning for the next fix and with each round the addiction becomes more intense to where eventually you are hooked.
Though I accept Governor Sanford’s very public Jimmy Swaggart apology, the damage is done! I believe he is sorry only because he was about to get caught. As for his wife, trusting this man privately, though admirable as she may want to sound, she needs to really think this one out. His betrayal, though forgivable, isn’t forgettable. And frankly living under this kind of suspicion for the rest of your life isn’t worth it … she needs to get out! Last but not least, publicly, should this man ever deal with moral and spiritual issues, I would not trust him to decipher right from wrong. All the way around, Sanford is damaged goods and should return to private life where forgiveness is a lot more forgiving than where he stands today.
