On Thursday’s premier show So You Think You Can Dance, two males auditioned dancing the Samba. Following the routine, the judges were not exactly ecstatic, didn’t quite know what to say, but definitely didn’t like it. And now some are criticizing the judges as being anti-gay and homophobic.
At first viewing of the dance routine, my first reaction was; wow, this is a first for this show … two males dancing together. And I have to admit, at first I was kind of taken back by the judges comments. But after several re-viewings of the segment I have to weigh in by saying that I too didn’t find it appealing to my senses and was sort of confused by the dance itself.
Now I don’t care if one or the other is gay or not, but when dancing the Samba it definitely is a male on female dance … sorry, I don’t mean to offend, but the role switching was awkward for me and confusing to say the least. Plus, I have a hard time with guys acting effeminate … it just ain’t my style. Therefore, in the end, I wasn’t really all that impressed.
When it comes to dancing, yes, guys should be guys and girls should be girls. Had the couple danced more of contemporary style utilizing only their masculinity then I might have enjoyed it, but in this case I do not believe that the judges were being homophobic and I believe they got it right … bravo to the judges.
